This email clearly states our intention. To build Community Support. This article fails to promote our intentions as stated and will potentially damage our efforts in building Community Support for this issue.
When Mr. Babcock arrived last week for his interview the first thing I showed him was a letter from The National Conservation Resource Services. "attached pdf" This letter also clearly states NRCS's response to our communities concerns and what they are willing to do to support our community. The letter also invites myself and members of our community to Join and or Create a "Earth Team Volunteer" action group to help. ( I sent my application in the day I received the letter.)
Mr. Babcock wrote in his article. " Noel said he contacted the US Army Corps, who told him to contact...and to contact..." and the result Mr. Babcock stated. Noel is still not satisfied.
Response from Mr. Noel: I did call these agencies but the reporter failed to accurately report on our dialogue.
This is a complicated issue and every agency I contacted has been very cooperative and patient in explaining what can and can not be done for our community. Further each contact has expressed a willingness to work together.’ They are ready to help. We just have to let them know who needs help. How do we identify these people needing assistance? ASK for their help.
Don Borda and James Wood from the US Army Corps. Said they were more than willing to work with our community in whatever way the could. Just like the NRCS. Yes they have limited options and for many reasons, but none the less the US Army Corps has been and is still willing to assist our community. This is part of the reason I wanted to get a article written in the Rio Grand Sun. To help gather additional support for our community.
Rio Arriba County Office of Emergency Management, Emergency Manager- Dwayne Merritt. I met personally with Mr. Merritt and have had several phone conversations. Mr. Merritt also has been very helpful and again. Each Agency has their own areas of responsibility and duties. This is why we are seeking answers and solutions to our problem.
Mr. Babcock reported. Referring to "NOEL" But he said he as not gotten the help of anyone n his community"
Lets be clear. Mr. Noel began developing this Community BLOG less that a month ago. I created it for one simple reason. I knew I needed the help of my neighbors, my community and our local government and federal agencies because in my mind this is a community issue as it involves many living along the Rio Ojo Caliente.
So my response. REACH OUT to my neighbors, and community. Ask for their help. True few have responded but then again that's why I initially contacted the Rio Grand Sun. To publicly announce our blog and to seek out the others in our community effected by this issue.

Mr. Babcock also reported. The above mentioned agencies are willing to whatever they can to help, But these are short term fixes. "I want something more long term", stated Mr. Noel.
Response from Mr. Noel. Yes I want a long term fix to this issue for our community. We have many issues facing our community and the only way we are going to arrive at a solution is to work as a community identify issues in our community to solve these issues collectively.
As Mr. Gonzales (NRCS stated in his letter). " We would like to look at developing a community conservation plan if you can get other individuals on board so we cal really look at this concern and come up with a plan to address it.
Again. Why was this not published in Mr. Babcock's article? Again I ask the Rio Grand Sun to help us get the word out . Help our community connect on common ground and common action.
So how do we move forward? How can we correct this article and get the real message out?
My suggestion: As requested in my first email to the Rio Grand Sun. Publish this in your Northern Briefs. Please.
Rio Ojo Caliente resident seeks community support for flooding issues along the Rio Ojo Caliente. The National Resources Conservation Services and Rio Arriba County Officials and are ready to begin the dialogue. Let it begin here. http://montedeluznm.blogspot.com/
What we need.
1. To identify land owners along the Rio Ojo Caliente experiencing flooding.
2. Access each property owners risk of flooding and determine what can be done.
3. To further access who can help. Agencies local and federal agencies.
4. To Seek the active support of community land owners and to create Volunteer base capable of working together to address issues facing their community.
Mr. Babcock quoted a neighbor. Donald Gallegos. “ Stated a arroyo near his house flooded in recent years, but he does not see any reason to help prevent flooding nearby. While I appreciate and allow Mr. Gallegos’s opinion. I find it a bit distressing.
Last year the Rio Grand Sun reported. New Mexico State Of Disaster. I posted a video response to this article on the blog. Neighbor helping Neighbor is who saved Mr. Sanches in the days following the event that flooded his property. It is here I disagree with my neighbor. I say we need and must be able to depend on our neighbors and community when we are in need of assistance. It’s just what neighbors and community should do any other approach is not appropriate.
There is an arroyo in our development. I am not sure if this is the one that our neighbor was talking about. If so this arroyo was changed from it’s original course several years ago. One neighbor reported the arroyo flooded several years ago and over ran it’s back nearly flooding his property. If it did would our neighbor help his neighbor, or if for some reason his property flooded do you think he’d refuse his neighbors help. I hope not. I hope he’d welcome any support of help offered just like Mr. Sanches. Help is help and when someone offers a hand take it and further when someone is in need lend a hand. Why. It’s the right thing to do!
I just got a call from a neighbor who read the article in the Rio Grand Sun. We have talked several times about our community and our issues and his comment on this article. It separated community in it’s language. Not supportive at all of my original intent and I agree. It separates and divides.
Rio Grand Sun Reporter Misses the Boat In Rio Ojo Caliente leaving residents stranded and widening the gap between those that can help and those needing help. Get the story right. Please.
We are neighbors and me must act together to protect our way of life, our families and our community. This is the ONLY MESSAGE I want to share. Again I ask for your support.
Want to turn up the heat… Lets talk about Global Warming. New Mexico and the 21st Century. If this does not pull community together I don’t know what will. This is for our children.
I would encourage each of the persons to who this email is addressed to set the record straight with the Rio Grand Sun so we can move forward as a community in solving our issues together. Write the Rio Grand Sun and Mr. Babcock. So that they know we’re together for our community.
For others.. Check the blog. See what is posted. See who is ready to help, See what you can do to get involved, Help Identify others needing assistance and let’s get on with it. We have much to accomplish.
Sincerely:
Lynn Noel
